As the railroads moved westward during 19th century America, songs began to emerge about the travelers who would hop aboard the boxcars and journey to wherever the next destination may be. They may have been traveling to escape troubles or simply for adventure, but colorful songs resulted, and many have endured. A traditional hobo tune, The Wabash Cannonball allows students to develop the strongly connected-into-the-string fiddle style. The whole-step modulation from the key of C to the key of D will reinforce appropriate half and whole step finger patterns. Slightly more advanced than Beginning Strings, this series begins to involve more position work and a slightly more complex rhythmic figures. Rehearsal piano is often provided. Ideal for middle school and smaller high school programs. Grade 2 - 2.5.
