This book contains 28 pieces by Tielman Susato and Fridolin Sicher. The kinds of music practiced by the happy peasents in Breugel's paintings must have differed much from the songs and dances we know from surviving texts. We have only the distorted echoes of time, to be found in the art music of the period. Tielman Susato. died c. 1561. , one of the best-known Flemish printers of music, provides us with some insight into the spirit of the mid 16th century life through his dance music. Little is known of Fridolin Sicher. 1490-1546. except that he was a German organist employed at St. Gall and Bischofszell, and that he studied with Buchner in Constance. His fame lies in his having compiled collections of music by the greatest Flemish and German masters of his time. As Constance, and also St. Gall, were natural stopping points for the Flemish musicians travelling to Italy, one can assume that it was here that Sicher gathered most of the musical treasures for his library.
