I was sitting in my office one day a few years ago and thought, "Although he wrote 24 etudes (27 including the 3 posthumous pieces), he only used 15 different keys." I listed the 9 unused ones and decided to write an etude in each of those keys, while imitating (more or less) Chopin's style. Here's the happy result! No. 1 is a turbulent, churning study featuring arpeggiated figures in both hands. Warning: the frequent key changes are really abrupt.
